Tonton David
Tonton David (born October 12, 1967 in Réunion ); - real name: David Grammont - is a French musician and reggae artist.
Life
At the age of nine, Tonton David immigrated with his family to Paris via Gambia and Senegal , where he grew up in the 15th arrondissement . At the age of 15, he left his family and made his own way by playing reggae and soul and performing with friends. He lived and played for some time in Great Britain, where he joined the Rastafarian community in 1987 .
Today Tonton David is considered a pioneer of French reggae and one of the pioneers of raggamuffin . He started in various sound systems before he was discovered in 1990 by the French television documentary FUCK and shortly afterwards signed by Virgin Records .
In his socially critical texts, he addresses, among other things, his youth, tells of drugs, crime and unemployment and denounces racism and other abuses. One of his best-known songs is Il marche seul (= “He goes alone”) from 1994, in which he sings about a homeless person (French: SDF ).
In 2003 he was seen live for the first time in Germany at the 15th Africa Festival in Würzburg.
