LeRoy Robert Ripley (born December 25, 1890 in Santa Rosa , California - † May 27, 1949 ) also known as Robert Ripley was an American cartoonist , radio reporter and world traveler .

Robert Ripley made a name for himself as a comic book artist at a young age. He drew cartoons in newspapers for which he worked as a sports reporter and traveled the world. He documented his travels extensively and used them to collect stories and oddities, which he drew when he could not take them with him, and which he drew under the title Ripley's Believe It or Not! published as a comic strip collection and radio show. The German TV adaptation is broadcast by RTL II . In 1933 he opened his first museum in Chicago where he exhibited the collected curiosities - an odditorium . He died on May 27, 1949 at the age of 58 of aHeart attack . Today there are over 20 odditories around the world, most of them in the United States .

In 1995 a computer game was released, The Riddle of Master Lu , in which Ripley played the main role. Among other things, it was about traveling the world and sending curiosities that are found in the individual adventures to New York City .

After Robert Ripley's death, the tradition of collecting the unbelievable from around the world was continued by Ripley Entertainment. The company maintains a database, a photo archive and a warehouse for its collection of exhibits. It is the company's declared aim to continue the tradition of Robert Ripley.

The life of Robert Ripley is now being filmed by Chris Columbus under the title "Believe It or Not" with Jim Carrey in the lead role.
