Tony Falanga

Anthony "Tony" Falanga (* in Brooklyn , New York) is an American double bass player who works in the fields of classical, jazz and world music . He became known through his collaboration with Ornette Coleman .

Career

Falanga studied at the Manhattan School of Music , then at the Juilliard School of Music , where David Walter was his mentor; he continued his studies at Berklee College of Music , where he graduated in jazz performance .

He is assistant to the head of the Orchestra of St. Lukes . Since 2002 he has been a member of the Ornette Coleman Quartet, with which he recorded the 2007 Pulitzer Prize- winning album Sound Grammar .

He has also appeared as a soloist with the New York Concertino, the Tchaikovsky Chamber Orchestra, Wynton Marsalis , Joe Lovano and Jim Hall . With his colleagues John Patitucci and John Feeney interpreted their own arrangements of pieces by Charles Mingus for three basses. He accompanied Giora Feidman on several European tours and is also documented on his albums. He is currently a member of Al MacDowell's Just Ornette Quartet . Falanga can also be heard as a companion on albums by Annie Gosfield , Rosie O'Donnell and Frederica von Stade .
