Tony Newton (musician)

Antonio Lloyd Newton (1948 in Detroit , Michigan ) is an American bass guitarist and keyboardist.

Newton began piano training at the age of seven and switched to bass guitar at the age of thirteen. He had an early opportunity to perform with blues legends such as John Lee Hooker , T-Bone Walker and Little Walter . At the age of eighteen he joined Motown Records and subsequently worked with Motown musicians such as Diana Ross , The Supremes , Martha Reeves & the Vandellas , Marvin Gaye , Stevie Wonder , the Four Tops , The Temptations , Michael Jackson , The Jackson 5 and The Spinners . He also appeared with the Funk Brothers and formed the double bass line-up with James Jamerson on hits such as Where Did Our Love Go , Stop in the Name of Love , Never Can Say Goodbye and Don't Leave Me This Way .

In the next few years Newton established himself as a musician and composer. He has worked with rock, pop and rhythm and blues musicians such as Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin , Smokey Robinson , Stevie Wonder , Gladys Knight and Little Richard and was bassist, singer and composer for the fusion jazz group The Tony Williams Lifetime . In 1979/80 he was a member of the hard rock group G-Force , where he performed with guitarist Gary Moore and composed titles such as You Kissed Me Sweetly and Dancing . Newton worked for the singer Thelma Houston as a keyboardist, musical director, composer and producer.

Newton also works with his own band, the White Dove Orchestra , composed soundtracks for several films, written books on music theory, computer technology and philosophy, and composed a musical and a symphony, and teaches and gives workshops.
