Tony Sibson (* 9. April 1958 in Leicester ) is a former British boxers in the middleweight division , two-time European champion and three-time world title challenger of the associations WBA , WBC and IBF .

Career

Tony Sibson played 102 amateur fights and switched to professional camp in 1976. In 1979 he won the British championship title in the Royal Albert Hall of London by a TKo win against Frank Lucas, but lost it in the first defense of the title on points to Kevin Finnegan . In March 1980 Sibson was able to secure the Commonwealth Championship by winning points against Chisanda Mutti.

On December 8, 1980, he won the EBU European Championship in the Royal Albert Hall by knocking out the undefeated Italian Matteo Salvemini (22-0). He then successfully defended the title against Andoni Amana (42-2), Alan Minter , Nicola Cirelli (24-1) and Jacques Chinon, and he also beat the American Dwight Davison (31-1) in a non-title fight.

On February 11, 1983 Sibson boxed in the DCU Center of Worcester for the world middleweight title of the associations WBA and WBC, but was defeated by the title holder Marvin Hagler by TKo in the sixth round. By that time, Sibson had been ranked number 1 on the WBC challenger list.

Sibson defeated the unbeaten American John Collins (29-0) in his next fight and was again EBU European champion on February 25, 1984 when he won points in Paris against Louis Acariès (38-4). In November 1984 he beat Mark Kaylor (27-2) and won again the British and Commonwealth titles.

For a WBC world championship fight he briefly switched to light heavyweight, but lost the title fight on September 10, 1986 in London by TKo in the ninth round against Dennis Andries .

In September 1987 Sibson was in London by a TKo victory against Brian Anderson for the third time British champion and Commonwealth champion in the middleweight, for which he was awarded the prestigious Lonsdale Belt .

On February 7, 1988 he boxed in Stafford for the IBF world title, but lost this fight by TKo in the tenth round against Frank Tate . Subsequently, Sibson ended his active career.
