The Top Mountain Motorcycle Museum in Hochgurgl in Tyrol is considered to be the highest motorcycle museum in Europe ( 2,474  m above sea level ). It opened in April 2016 and is open all year round. Historic motorcycles and automobiles as well as special exhibitions are shown on an area of around 3000 m². In 2018, around 230 motorcycles from over 100 different manufacturers were on display (around 30 of which were on loan). Two thirds of the exhibits are still roadworthy. Giacomo Agostini is the “godfather” of the Top Mountain Motorcycle Museum .

history

The collection of the twin brothers Alban and Attila Scheiber began with 40 motorcycles (20 of which can be used), which they acquired from a private motorcycle museum in Holzhausen an der Haide in the Rhein-Lahn district in Rhineland-Palatinate .

The oldest exhibits are:

  • a 122 year old motorcycle by Hillebrand & Wolfsmüller, built in 1894.
  • a Peugeot Model D from 1904,
  • a Czech Laurin & Klement CC Dourdan from 1905.

The German Megola with a five-cylinder radial engine in the front wheel is described as a particularly expensive rarity. This motorcycle is said to be worth around 500,000 euros. Other exhibited models from the following manufacturers can be found: Adler, Aermacchi , AJS , Ardie, Benelli, BMW , Brough Superior, Bultaco, Condor, Cotton, DKW , Ducati, Dürkopp, Flying Merkel, Gilera, Harley-Davidson , Hecker, Henderson, Hercules with rotary engine, Honda, Horex , Humber, Indian , Jawa, KTM, Matchless , Militaire, Moto Guzzi , Münch 1200 TTS "Mammut", MV Agusta , MZ, Neracar, New Imperial, Norton , NSU , Peugeot Pope, Puch, Royal Enfield , Sarolea, Scott, Sunbeam , Suzuki, Terrot , Triumph , Vincent, Yamaha, Zündapp .

There are also a few cars in the motorcycle museum . For example a Ferrari Californian Spider, a Porsche Speedster, a Lotus 23 B, or the Alfa Romeo, which won the legendary Mille Miglia in 1936.

Location and building

The museum is located at the toll booth on Timmelsjochstraße on the Timmelsjoch, next to the Kirchenkarbahn I (10 -person gondola lift) in the so-called Top Mountain X-Crosspoint . It is a multifunctional building with a total area of 6060 m². There is also a service restaurant with a terrace (280 indoor and 380 outdoor seats). The cost of the building is said to have been 16 million euros (excluding the cable car system) and was planned by the architect Michael Brötz from Hall in Tirol .

Snow cornices are said to have been used as the basic structure for the shape of the building . The building facade consists almost entirely of wood.

Exhibition concept

The permanent exhibition (main motorcycle exhibition) is supplemented by special exhibitions. The development phases of individual motorization and their importance (economic, political and social conditions) for society over the last 130 years or so are presented, as well as technical progress. Among other things, individual items, special models, earlier everyday vehicles, racing and military machines are on display.
