The Toppini jumper monkey ( Plecturocebus toppini , Syn .: Callicebus toppini ) is a South American primate species that occurs in southeastern Peru, in northern Bolivia and in the east of the Brazilian state of Acre . The exact limits of the distribution area are not known. It is probably located between the Rio Purus in the north, the Río Ucayali and Río Urubamba in the west and extends to the south at least to the Río Madre de Dios , possibly also to the Río Tuichi .

features

The Toppini spring monkey resembles the red spring monkey ( Callicebus cupreus ), whose fur is actually more brownish to copper colored. On the other hand, the coat of the Toppini jumper monkey has a more reddish hue. The monkeys have a gray to brownish back, a reddish whiskers, dark reddish brown ears, yellowish gray hair on the top of the head and a dark line over the eyes. The abdomen, the outsides of the lower legs and arms are reddish in color. The tail hairs are gray and black, the two thirds close to the body have a black tip, which is why the tail appears darker than that of the red jumper. The tip of the tail is white. As with all Amazonian jumper monkeys, males and females look the same.

Systematics

The Toppini's jumper monkey was described in 1914 by the British zoologist Oldfield Thomas , declared a junior synonym of the brown jumper monkey ( Plecturocebus brunneus ) in 1963 by the biologist Philip Hershkovitz , and in 1990, after examining further specimens including the holotype , with the red jumper monkey ( Plecturocebus cupreus ) synonymized. In mid-2015, Plecturocebus toppini was declared a valid species again after scientists observed the difference to the red juggler monkey after observations in the field and these differences were confirmed by examining prepared museum specimens. The Madidi spring monkey ( Plecturocebus aureipalatii , Wallace, 2005 ) is possibly a junior synonym of Plecturocebus toppini .
