from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tor Folke Rene Nilsson (born March 20, 1919 in Lund , Skåne , † April 13, 1989 ibid) was a Swedish wrestler . He won at the Olympic Games 1948 in London a silver medal in Greco-Roman wrestling in heavyweight .

Career

Tor Nilsson lived all his life in his native Lund. There he also started wrestling as a teenager at the ring sports club BK Balder Lund . He concentrated on the Greco-Roman style. As a result of his year of birth, he was unlucky that, due to the Second World War, there were no international competitions between 1940 and 1945, i.e. those years that could have been his best.

In Sweden he had strong opponents in those years in John Nyman , Nils Åkerlindh and especially in Bertil Antonsson , all of whom were world class and largely blocked the way to national success. Even so, he became Swedish heavyweight champions in the Greco-Roman style in 1947 and 1949.

In 1948 he was used at the Olympic Games in London , where he won the silver medal in the Greco-Roman heavyweight division . He defeated L. Pidduck from Great Britain , then lost to Ahmet Kireççi from Turkey and also won over Moritz Inderbitzen from Switzerland and Guido Fantoni from Italy . The start at these Olympics was the only start he made in an international championship.
