Torbjörn Gehrke

Torbjörn Arne Gehrke (born July 27, 1967 in Linköping ) is a Swedish basketball coach and former player.

Life

Gehrke, a 2.04 meter tall indoor player, played until 1987 in his home country Sweden for the first division club Alvik Basket Stockholm.

From 1987 to 1989 the Swede studied and played at Stetson University in the United States , returned to Sweden and to Alvik, before returning to the United States for a college team in the 1992/93 season, this time at the University of North Florida played. That game year he led North Florida with a points average of 15.8 per game.

Gehrke then strengthened Plannja Basket in Sweden, in 1996 he moved to the French second division club Toulouse Basket Club, with which he then entered the first division in 1997/98, where he scored an average of 6.6 points in 15 games and during the season to league rivals Paris Basket Racing switched. Gehrke played ten games at the capital club and achieved an average of 2.9 points per encounter.

In the 1998/99 season Gehrke received a short-term contract with the Spanish top club Tau Cerámica Vitoria and stood for the team in the ACB League in five games on the field, in which the Swede posted an average of 1.8 points and 1.6 rebounds. In early December 1998 Gehrke moved to MTV 1846 Gießen in the basketball league . By the end of the season he was used by the Mittelhessen in 14 Bundesliga games and scored an average of 10 points and 3.1 rebounds per game.

He went back to Sweden, strengthened Plannja Basket again and became national champion with the team in the 1999/2000 season. So he ended his competitive sports career for the time being, but returned to the field in February 2002 and ran for Solna IF in the first division until the end of the 2001/02 game year.

As a trainer he was in charge of the Södertälje Kings from 2003 to 2005 and led them to win the Swedish championship in 2005. In the 2006/07 season he was in charge of the team at the LSE Basketball Club in London and in 2007 took up a second term as coach of the Södertälje Kings, which lasted until 2010. From 2010 to 2012 he was coach of the Solna Vikings and from 2012 to 2014 of the second division Alvik Basket. In addition to his duties at club level, Gehrke also worked as assistant coach for the Swedish national team in 2007/08 and from 2010 to 2013. In the run-up to the 2014/15 season, he took up the post of head coach of the Swedish first division club Jämtland Baskets. At the end of the 2019/20 season there was a separation.

In May 2020, Gehrke was introduced as the new head coach of US Basket Racing Luxembourg.

National team

Gehrke made 134 international appearances for Sweden. With the national team he competed at the European Championships in 1993 and 1995.
