The 19th stage of the Tour de France 2019 took place on July 26, 2019. The originally 126.5 kilometer long mountain stage was supposed to lead from Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne to Tignes . The stage start was at 1:45 p.m. on Rue de la Liberation , the sharp start was at 1:55 p.m. southeast of Villargondran near the A43 motorway . Due to adverse weather conditions, the stage was canceled and scored with the time intervals when crossing the Col de l'Iseran . The length of the stage was 89 kilometers.
Race course
The field of drivers drove the first few kilometers at a high speed, so that some drivers lost touch with the peloton. There were also several unsuccessful escape attempts. After about seven kilometers, a group of four with Vincenzo Nibali , Pello Bilbao , Jesús Herrada and Daniel Martin was able to pull away from the main field. However, the leading group only achieved a maximum lead of around 45 seconds. After the first mountain classification ( Côte de Saint-André ), a group of almost 20 chasers formed, which the top quartet was able to catch up with on the way to the second mountain classification ( Montée d'Aussois ). The newly formed top group consisted of Dylan van Baarle , Patrick Konrad , Tony Gallopin , Vincenzo Nibali, Damiano Caruso , Sébastien Reichenbach , Alejandro Valverde , Marc Soler , Andrey Amador , Pello Bilbao, Gorka Izagirre , Magnus Cort Nielsen , Alexei Luzenko , Laurens De Plus , Rigoberto Urán , Alberto Bettiol , Michael Woods , Simon Yates , Daniel Martin, Fabio Aru , Giulio Ciccone , Jesús Herrada, Guillaume Martin , Roman Kreuziger , Warren Barguil and Elie Gesbert . The lead over the peloton slowly increased.
In the meantime, the Frenchman Thibaut Pinot ( Groupama-FDJ ) had to give up the race because he sustained an injury in his thigh. Before the stage, he was fifth overall, 1:50 minutes behind the leader in the overall standings. When climbing to the Col de la Madeleine near Lanslevillard , the leading group had a lead of around 1:30 minutes.

At the foot of the Col de l'Iseran the lead was about 1:40 minutes. The size of the leading group and the peloton decreased. On the way to Col de l'Iseran, the Ineos team drove at a high pace in the peloton, which meant that many riders could no longer follow. Several groups formed, including a. the favorite group with around 15 riders. About 6 kilometers before the summit, Geraint Thomas made the first attack in the favorites group, but the pursuers were able to close the gap again. Shortly before, Nairo Quintana lost touch . Then Steven Kruijswijk attacked and Julian Alaphilippe - the wearer of the yellow jersey - fell back, he too had lost touch and followed Geraint Thomas, Egan Bernal , Emanuel Buchmann , Mikel Landa and Steven Kruijswijk. Then Bernal was able to break away from the favorites group with a strong start and joined the top group - from Nibali, Urán, Simon Yates and Barguil - but Urán and Nibali could no longer keep up with Bernal's high pace. About 4 kilometers before the summit, Bernal separated from the leading group and continued as a soloist. Simon Yates was several seconds behind the leader. The chasing group around Geraint Thomas, Emanuel Buchmann, Mikel Landa and Steven Kruijswijk were over 40 seconds behind, while Alaphilippe was about 1:20 minutes behind. Bernal was the first to cross the Col de l'Iseran, virtually took over the yellow jersey, received 8 bonus seconds for the final bill and received the souvenir Henri Desgrange . Simon Yates crossed the Col 13 seconds behind, Warren Barguil was 40 seconds behind when crossing. The group around Kruijswijk, Uran, Barguil, Landa and Thomas had a gap of 1:03 minutes. Alaphilippe crossed the pass 2:10 minutes behind.
Egan Bernal was accompanied by Simon Yates on the descent, while Alaphilippe tried to close the gap to the favorites on the descent. A few kilometers further on near Val-d'Isère and Tignes, heavy rain and hail showers occurred, which also triggered landslides. This made the streets impassable. The drivers were informed of the special situation and had to stop about 20 kilometers before the stage finish - the organizers abandoned the race prematurely and the stage was classified up to the Col de l'Iseran . The last mountain classification as well as the points evaluation and bonus seconds at the finish in Tignes were not awarded. There was also no stage winner and there was no award for the most combative driver of the stage. The points awarded in the intermediate sprint and the mountain classifications crossed, including the bonus seconds on the Col de l'Iseran, were taken into account. Due to the extraordinary circumstances, the organizers waived the waiting period for this stage.
The Colombian Egan Bernal took over the yellow jersey . The gap to fifth in the overall ranking was now less than 2 minutes. There was no further change to the jersey straps.
