Gundersen, who started for the Lillehammer Skiklub , ran in Sjusjøen for the first time in the cross-country Scandinavian Cup in January 2007 and finished 74th in the 15 km mass start race. At the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships 2007 in Tarvisio , he was sixth in the sprint. In the 2008/09 season he came with two top ten placements, including second place over 10 km freestyle in Ulricehamn on 11th place in the overall ranking of the Scandinavian Cup. This was his best overall placement in the Scandinavian Cup. He had his debut in the cross-country skiing world cup in March 2010 in Oslo , which he finished in 41st place in the sprint. In February 2011, he brought in Drammen on his second and last World Cup appearance with the 12th place in the sprint his first and only World Cup points. He ran his last international race in March 2014 at the Engadin Skimarathon . He finished 50th over 42 km freestyle.
