Torre Canne is a fraction of the Italian municipality of Fasano in the province of Brindisi , Apulia region . The place name is derived from the symbol of the place. "Torre Canne" means something like "sugar cane tower".

geography

The place is about 9.5 km east of Fasano and about 50 km northwest of Brindisi on the Adriatic coast.

history

The thermal springs were already known in the 19th century, but they were not developed until the 20th century. The dune areas of Torre Canne are home to many animals that are on the Italian Red List and have been the nature reserve Parco naturale regional Dune costiere da Torre Canne a Torre San Leonardo since 2006 .

The place became known in Germany in 1985 when Norbert Poehlke , who was wanted as a hammer murderer in Germany , first shot his son here on October 22, 1985 and then killed himself with his service weapon. While fleeing, he spent a few days around here before his suicide. He had committed six murders in total.

economy

The over 400 inhabitants live from fishing and some tourism.
