Torre de Hercules (Villajoyosa, Alicante)
The Tower of Hercules ( Torre de San José ) in Villajoyosa , a town in the province of Alicante the Autonomous Region of Valencia ( Spain ), is a mausoleum of the second third of the 2nd century AD. The grave monument is a protected architectural monument .
description
The mausoleum, with a width of 6.40 meters and a current height of 5.95 meters, has four step-shaped, recessed cuboid layers as a substructure. The building, which is rectangular in plan with corner pilasters, resembles a tower. The upper end, which can still be seen on drawings from the 18th century, is missing. Fragments such as a pilaster capital , an architrave and parts of the cornice have been found. The pilasters protruding slightly at the corners stand on a protruding base level. The Torre dels Escipions is another example of these tower-like funerary monuments.
