Location of the Torre di Ceccia

The Torre von Ceccia ( French Tour de Ceccia , Corsican Casteddu di Ceccia ) is a circular torrean monument south of Porto-Vecchio in Corsica . A steep path leads through an olive grove to the Torre , which is about 100 m higher in the direction of Sotta than the eponymous hamlet of Ceccia on a steeply sloping terrain spur dominating the plain. The view from the Torre extends over the entire plain of the Stabiacciu to the Gulf of Porto-Vecchio and the surrounding mountains.

Torre of Ceccia

Compared to other Torren, the Torre de Ceccia has an abnormal architecture . A terrace lies on top of the monument. It is lined with an openwork wall made of large stone blocks. According to Roger Grosjean, ritual fires were lit here. A staircase covered with stone slabs provides access to the round cella, which is eccentrically located within the monument . With a diameter of two meters, it is very small and the most hidden of all the central chambers in a Torrean monument. From the vaults of Cella part is still preserved. The dwellings of the Torreaner were found near the hamlet.

During the excavation in 1961, Grosjean found Torrean pottery under a pseudo-Genoese wall. The site has four archaeological layers:

  • the top one is from Genoese times (finds in the Bastia museum)
  • the second is prehistoric but empty (yellow and red clay)
  • the third was made using the radiocarbon method on 1350-1300 BC. Dated. They found obsidian pieces and urns of various shapes that are younger than those of Tappa proven, but are of the same nature as those of Torre in the eponymous town Torre .
  • the fourth layer is the surface in the higher room, above the inner corridor.

A 600 m long path leads from Ceccia to the Torre de Bruschiccia. Its foundation walls are on a rock. Inside, the corridor ends at an abri . As with Ceccia, cultivation took place in Genoese times. The finds (obsidian, arrowheads, grindstones and ceramics from the Bronze Age ) are exhibited in the Musée de Préhistoire Corse in Sartène .
