Sanctuary of Torreparedones

Torreparedones was an Iberian city southeast of Córdoba in what is now the Spanish Autonomous Community of Andalusia . The city was known in the 19th century under the name Torres or Torre de las Virgenes or Torreparedones .

location

Torreparedones is located on a hill from which you can see the valley of the Guadalquivir . The area belongs to the municipality of Castro del Río in the Comarca Campiña de Baena .

history

The first settlement of the place goes back to the Copper Age . The city wall , which encloses an area of 10.5 hectares , was built in the 6th century BC. Built in BC. On the south side, on the top of a hill, is the sanctuary outside the wall . This was explored by excavations from 1988. One came across a building from the 4th century BC. In the 3rd century BC. Had been rebuilt. The two exposed stone, semicircular constructions are interpreted as sacrificial sites. In the 2nd century BC The sanctuary was renewed and a sacred building was erected, consisting of a cella with internal dimensions of 5 × 4.2 meters. This cella opens onto a larger room or courtyard in the south. Inside the cella stood a central pillar on a base and probably supported the roof or the space above, which consisted of wooden beams, boards and mortar . Another column stood in the middle of the back wall of the cella, perhaps it was the bearer of a cult object. Opposite the cella was a small stone pedestal, on which there may have been an altar . During the excavations 56 statuettes were found which were deposited in the cella as votive offerings . The sanctuary was probably abandoned in the 1st century AD and the statuettes were broken. The roof of the still intact building was destroyed by fire in the 2nd century AD.
