The Torreta de Guardamar is a transmission mast for the Spanish Navy , built by the US Navy . It is near Guardamar del Segura . With a height of 370 meters, it is not only the tallest structure in Europe for military use , but also the tallest structure on the Iberian Peninsula and the second tallest structure in the EU .
The Torreta de Guardamar, built in 1962, is a guyed steel truss mast with a triangular cross-section, insulated from earth , which represents a shield antenna for long-wave radio and is used to transmit messages to submerged submarines.
The transmitter, which uses the Torreta de Guardamar as a transmitting antenna, has been operated remotely from the US Naval Communication Station in Rota since it was commissioned . In contrast to other long-wave transmitters , such as DHO38 in West-Rhauderfehn, the system apparently does not have a fixed transmission frequency assigned by the ITU and also no callsign.
