Tortricodes old ella is a butterfly from the family of Winder (Tortricidae). In English, the butterfly species is called Winter Shade (" winter shade ").
features
The butterflies have a wingspan of 19–23 mm. The front wings are unusually narrow for a curler. Correspondingly, the butterfly appears relatively slender when seated. The wing drawing is very variable. The inner area of the forewings is gray in color. A dark brown wavy band separates it from the outer area, which is colored brown-gray. The males have much stronger ciliated antennae than the females.
distribution
Tortricodes alternella is widespread in Europe. In the north they occur as far as central Sweden. The species is apparently absent in the southern and southeastern Balkans .
Way of life
Tortricodes alternella forms one generation a year. The species flies as one of the earliest curlers of the year. Your flight time lasts from February to April. In favorable weather conditions, the butterflies can even be observed in January. The male moths fly both during the day and at night, while the female moths are only active at night. The butterflies are attracted by artificial light sources. The butterflies are usually found in forest biotopes where their forage plants are found. The caterpillars feed on various trees and bushes, in particular various oaks ( Quercus ) and the (common) hornbeam ( Carpinus betulus ). Other forage plants are: birch ( Betula ), blackthorn ( Prunus spinosa ), single hawthorn ( Crataegus monogyna ), Dutch linden ( Tilia × europaea ) and common hazel ( Corylus avellana ). The caterpillars spin two leaves of their forage plants together and feed on the leaves from their web. They are usually seen in May and June.
