Torture Wheel is a funeral doom band founded in 2003 .

history

EM Hearst from Wraith of the Ropes , who lives in Hamilton Ohio , initiated “Torture Wheel as a solo project in early 2003”. In another interview, Hearst said 2002 was the beginning of the band. A major reason for the further project was the length of the writing process with Wraith of the Ropes. His musical goal with Torture Wheel was to realize his "own vision of Funeral Doom" and to forego the components of industrial and electronic music that were part of the main project . In addition, he wanted to be more intuitive and less constructive with the Torture Wheel.

In 2003 Nulll Records released a split EP with Uncertainty Principle by Kostas Panagiotou for Doom-Metal.com praised the split EP as a "diamond in the rough" and a "rare jewel" that connoisseurs of extreme music could "offer a lot". The following year Thee Bridge ov Madness was released , a split album with Moss , which was highly praised for Dutch Markzware Metal and British Doom-Metal.com. While Jan Hendriksen criticized signs of wear and tear for Zware Metalen and attested Torture Wheel, a creeping boredom, Oscar Strik praised the album for Doom-Metal.com and recommended it to anyone of one or both of the music styles included, Funeral Doom and Drone Doom .

With the EP Crushed Under… released via Firedoom Music , Torture Wheel achieved international attention. American, French, Italian, Dutch, German, and British reviews included the EP. The ratings ranged from particularly positive, above average, to markedly negative. According to Andreas Stappert from Rock Hard , the EP is "simply pure boredom", the EP was given similar attributes in a review written for Metal.de . Crushed Under… was “unnecessary, cheap, superfluous, boring” it said there. Opposite were reviews that were written for webzines such as Vampster , Eternity, Terrorverlag and Doom-Metal.com, and in which the music as the “last […] lute of human sound art”, “a successful mixture of drone ambient doom and funeral Doom ”with a“ completely different and unconventional sound ”. With reference to the negative ratings, Tobias Fischer wrote for Terrorverlag that the "harsh reviews that 'Crushed Under ...' received in the press prove that this will not be for everyone. But for the unconventional and unconventional, this is a wonderfully depressing three quarters of an hour of heroically negative Dooms. "

Songwriting

The music played with the Torture Wheel is arranged around the rhythm by Hearst . When programming the drum computer , Hearst orientates himself on numerology and mathematics in order to determine the “course”, “flow” and “structure” of the pieces before he builds up “the rest of the song around the rhythm”. All of the ensuing instrumentation follows this rhythm, although Torture Wheel's music has "long sections with no drums or perceptible rhythm". The guitar, bass and keyboard playing are approached and arranged around this, following what Hearst calls “constant and very strict rhythm and flow carved in stone”. As the last element, Hearst writes the lyrics and adds the vocals. Meanwhile, he describes the lyrics and singing as the least important aspect, which, however, gives the music a further dimension.

style

In a review written for the webzine Doom-Metal.com, the music is dubbed "Horror Funeral Doom " and compared to Wraith of the Ropes . Torture Wheel is musically and atmospherically similar, but concentrates more strictly on creating an extreme funeral doom and has no electronic elements. The music is “haunting, creepy and mythical.” Hearst names the debut of Shape of Despair Shades of… as well as various projects by Stijn van Cauter , in particular The Ethereal and Beyond Black Void, as important influences on the style he played. In a review written for Vampster, Captain Chaos describes Torture Wheel's music as "minimalist".

"[Few] riffs and slow drumming adorn the songs, not much happens, especially nothing obvious. Small gadgets only happen in the background, sick synths and samples keep flowing in, with a few songs there are also terrifying screams to be heard. "
