List of domestic dogs

The Tosa ( Japanese 土 佐 闘 犬 , Tosa tōken , dt. "Tosa fighting dog" or 土 佐 犬 , Tosa inu / ken , dt. "Tosa dog" which, however, can also refer to the Shikoku ) is a Japanese breed of dog recognized by the FCI ( FCI Group 2, Section 2.1, Standard No. 260 ).

Origin and history

The origin of the race goes back to the middle of the 19th century in the Tosa - han fief of what was then Japan . According to the breed standard , the Tosa was created by crossing the Shikoku-Ken with western breeds such as Bulldog , Mastiff , German pointing dogs and German mastiff . Possibly were Bernard and Bull involved in the development of the breed. The Tosa was originally bred for use in dog fights of a special kind: Similar to the sumo wrestlers , these dogs fought with the runs and the body and wrestled the opponent to the ground, biting and even growling led to disqualification. Today he is often used as a guard dog .

description

According to the breed standard, the Tosa male should be at least 60 cm tall, the bitch at least 55 cm with a suitable weight. His powerful, muscular body should appear elegant. Its fur is short and available in red, black, fawn, apricot or brindle . All colors are possible with discrete white markings on the chest and paws, but a warm, strong shade of red with or without white markings is preferred.

Essence

The ideal Tosa should be characterized by patience, serenity, fearlessness and courage.

Legal position

The Tosa is classified as dangerous in some federal states of Germany and in some Swiss cantons and in Liechtenstein. Breeding, importation and keeping are prohibited in the cantons of Geneva and Valais . In Austria , the Tosa is on the pedigree list in all three list-leading federal states ( Vienna , Lower Austria , Vorarlberg ). Depending on the federal state, a " dog license " (Vienna), " certificate of competence " (Lower Austria) or a special permit from the mayor (Vorarlberg) is required. In France and Great Britain dogs of the "type Tosa" are banned - not only the Tosa itself, but also all dogs that look like a Tosa. Also in Denmark he is on the breed list of the dog law .
