Tosanoides is a genus of anthias (Anthiadinae). The fish live at depths of 40 to 150 meters in coral and rock reefs in the tropical Pacific from Japan to the Coral Sea and Hawaii to Easter Island .

features

Tosanoides flavofasciatus
Tosanoides obama

Tosanoides species are 5 to 10 cm long and stand out due to their colourfulness with orange, yellow, reddish, blue and violet hues. The first ray of the dorsal fin is as long as the diameter of the eyes or much longer. The pectoral fins are longer than the head.

Tosanoides shares the following characteristics with the Anthias Serranocirrhitus and Dactylanthias : an elongated body, all rays of the pectoral fins are unbranched, the caudal fin is crescent-shaped, the lateral line forms an angle below the last rays of the dorsal fin and the upper edge of the preoperculum is slightly serrated. Tosanoides differs from Serranocirrhitus in that it has a lower body, a longer first dorsal fin ray and fewer soft rays in the dorsal fin (17 vs. 18-20). Of Dactylanthias differs Tosanoides through a longer first dorsal ray, a non-protruding jaw and less pectoral rays (13 vs. 18). Tosanoides differs from the closely related genus Tosana by a higher body, a longer first dorsal fin ray, long pectoral fins that are only supported by unbranched fin rays and three predorsal bones (bones in front of the dorsal fin). Tosana , on the other hand, has short pectoral fins in which the central fin rays are branched and only two predorsal bones.

species

At the moment (February 2019) the genus consists of six described species:

Pseudanthias fucinus (Randall & Ralston, 1985) shares many characteristics with Tosanoides and may need to be transferred to this genus. There is also another unknown species known from Easter Island.

Systematics

The genus Tosanoides was introduced in 1953 with the description of Tosanoides filamentosus and was initially monotypical . With the description of another species, Tosanoides flavofasciatus , the diagnosis of the genus was expanded. Three more species were described in 2016 and 2018.
