Toshihira Ōsumi

Toshihira Ōsumi ( Japanese 大 隅 俊平 , Ōsumi Toshihira , real name: Ōsumi Sadao or Ōsumi Tadao; note * January 23, 1932 in Ōta , Gunma prefecture ; † October 4, 2009 ibid) was a Japanese swordsmith. It was declared in 1997 as a living national treasure for the important intangible cultural asset “swordsmithing”.

Toshihira learned the art of swordsmithing in Sakaki in Nagano Prefecture from the blacksmith Miyairi Yukihira (1913–1977), who was also named a Living National Treasure . In 1958 he returned to his hometown Ōta and ran his own forge, in which he made swords in the bitchū tradition with hamon in the suguha form using Tamahagane swords . He was awarded the Masamune Prize ( 正宗 賞 ), which is named after the swordsmith Masamune , three times . In 1988 he was honored as an honorary citizen of his hometown. In 1999 he received the Medal of Honor on the violet ribbon and in 2006 the Order of the Rising Sun (commander's class).

Toshihira Ōsumi died in April 2009 at the age of 77 in his home in Ōta.

NoteThe personal encyclopedia Nihon Jinmei Daijiten, the entry at Tobuken and the Gunma Shōgai Gakushū Center give the real name Namen , the former both without reading, the latter with the usual Sadao as reading, the Toshihira Ōsumi Museum, however, gives Tadao ( 貞 夫 ).
