Touchdown Club of Columbus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Touchdown Club of Columbus was founded in 1956 in Columbus (Ohio) , at the suggestion of the later Ohio State Governor Jim Rhodes , by Sam B. Nicola. Nicola was president of the association until his death in 1993. Ten years later, his son Sam Nicola, Jr. took over the running of the Touchdown Club.

history

The first banquet was held under the direction of Sam B. Nicola in 1956. Since then, the guest list has included many American football legends such as Jim Brown , Bronko Nagurski and Coach Woody Hayes , but baseball stars such as Derek Jeter also attended the annual meeting. Therefore, the name of the Touchdown Club seems wrong, because every year athletes from all sports, not just football players, are honored. The athletes are selected by the club's expert committee, consisting of coaches, sports journalists and former players. In 1993, more than 10 years after the founder's death, his son Sam Nicola Jr. took over the management. In the last twenty years, the association u. a. celebrated the 40th anniversary of the American Football League , honoring more than 60 living members of the Ohio State Buckeyes team of the century, and giving annual awards to some of the best football players and coaches the sport has ever seen.
