Tower Hill is an underground station of the London Underground in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets . It is in the Travelcard tariff zone 1 below the most important remains of the former London Wall . This is where the Circle Line and District Line trains stop . In 2014, 26.32 million passengers used the station. The Tower of London , Fenchurch Street Station and Tower Gateway Station of the Docklands Light Railway are in the immediate vicinity .

On September 25, 1882, the Metropolitan Railway , the predecessor of the Metropolitan Line , opened the Tower of London station . The Metropolitan District Railway (today's District Line ) closed on October 6, 1884 with the commissioning of the Mansion House - Whitechapel line, the last gap in the ring line, which runs around the entire city center of London. On the same day, Tower Hill station was replaced by Mark Lane station a little further to the west .

This station, which was renamed Tower Hill on September 1, 1946 , proved to be too small after a few decades to cope with the increasing volume of traffic. In particular, the lack of a third track for turning trains had a negative impact on operations. For this reason, a new station was built at the original location, with all remains of the Tower of London station, closed in 1884, being removed. The new Tower Hill station went into operation on February 5, 1967. Today there is a restaurant in the counter hall of the Mark Lane station . The office building above is called the Mark Lane Station Buildings . The entrance to the former station is still labeled with the old name.
