Toxocara mystax ( Syn. : Toxocara cati (cabinet, 1788)) is a in cats of common roundworm . It colonizes the small intestine of cats and can cause severe symptoms in young animals. Humans can also be infected by this worm; here it causes the disease of the wandering visceral larva ( Larva migrans visceralis ). It is combated by active ingredients ( anthelmintics ) that areeffective against roundworms.

Morphology and development

Female adult representatives of T. mystax are 9 to 18 cm long, male 5 to 10 cm. The front end shows clear cervical wings. The eggs are medium-sized and round at around 85 µm. They are thick-skinned and their surface is roughened - similar to a golf ball. When filing, they are not fearful. The embryo phase lasts about 10 to 15 days. The infectious larva can be found inside the egg shell. The prepatency is 28 to 38 days.

In suckling pups, the infection usually occurs through breast milk (lactogenic). Adult cats become infected by ingestion of the larvae, either directly or through paratenic hosts such as rodents or birds . People often become infected through contact with contaminated soil, especially children in sandboxes are at risk here. In addition, dogs can wear roundworm eggs by their paws and dog owners who are away from footpaths with their shoes in living areas.

Occurrence

The species occurs in different types of cats, including the house cat , the wild cat ( Felis silvestris ), the serval ( F. serwal ), the lynx ( Lynx lynx ), the cheetah ( Actinomyx jubatus ), the puma ( Puma concolor ), the lion ( Panthera leo ), the jaguar ( P. onca ), the tiger ( P. tigris ) and the ocelot ( Leopardus pardalis ). It can occur together with Toxascaris leonina as a double infection .

T. mystax causes clear clinical manifestations, especially in young animals, in older animals the disease-causing effect is low to moderate. Infested animals show mushy excrement, vomiting, shaggy fur and a disturbed general condition.

The control of adult worms is carried out with active substances against roundworms ( wormer cure ) such as milbemycin oxime , emodepside , febantel , fenbendazole or flubendazole .

Albendazole and mebendazole are suitable for anti-parasitic therapy in humans .
