Febantel is a medicinal substance that is used in veterinary medicine as an anthelmintic against roundworms , tapeworms and giardia . Chemically it is a sample zimidazole ( benzimidazole with an open imidazole ring ).
Mechanism of action
Febantel works by binding to tubulins of the parasite cell and the associated malfunction of the microtubules . This leads to damage to the cytoskeleton and a reduction in the uptake and intracellular transport of nutrients and metabolic products. Through this mechanism, Febantel also has an egg-killing (ovicidal) effect.
In tapeworms, Febantel lowers the muscle tone of the suction organs and triggers a destruction of the scolex , an enlargement of the excretion canals and a destruction of the epidermis . As a result, the parasites detach themselves from the intestinal wall after 4-8 hours and are excreted with the feces.
Pharmacokinetics
40% of Febantel is absorbed in the intestine. It is then converted into the actually effective metabolites fenbendazole and oxfendazole . The plasma half-life varies between 24 hours and 3 days depending on the species. Excretion takes place mainly through faeces and urine.
The effect depends primarily on the duration of an effective level of active ingredient. In carnivores, it is not or only insufficiently effective with a single application due to the fast intestinal passage.
Adverse side effects and contraindications
Brief weight loss may occur in puppies. Damage to the feathers of pigeons is described.
Febantel should not be used in pregnant or lactating bitches.
