Toyotama ( Japanese 豊 多 摩 郡 Toyotama-gun ) was a district ( -gun ) of the Japanese prefecture (-fu) Tokyo from 1896 to 1932 . It was in today's ["special -"] districts ([tokubetsu] -ku) Shinjuku , Shibuya , Nakano and Suginami .

Toyotama was created in 1896 through the merger of the districts of South Toshima ( Minami-Toshima ; created in 1878/79 when Toshima was divided) and East Tama ( Higashi-Tama ; created in 1878/79 when Tama was divided). The name Toyotama is a contraction of the of Toshima with 多 摩 Tama . At the beginning, the district consisted of two cities and twelve villages . The county government was established in the city of Yodobashi, not in one of the two original county towns ( Naitō-Shinjuku for South Toshima and Nakano for East Tama). All villages in Toyotama have been upgraded to cities over the years, the last three in 1926. In 1920 the city of Naitō-Shinjuku was incorporated into the independent city (-shi) Tokyo and part of the district (-ku) Yotsuya . In the 1920s, Toyotama County Council (1923) and County Council (1926) were dissolved, as was the case everywhere else in the country.

Finally, in 1932, all 13 cities from the Toyotama district were incorporated into the city of Tokyo (now "Greater Tokyo") and there were part of the districts of Yodobashi , Shibuya, Nakano and Suginami.
