The Transbay Transit Center is a train station in downtown San Francisco south of Mission Street from Second St to Beale St.

It replaces the Transbay Terminal , which suffered structural damage in the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989 .

The project, calculated at $ 4.5 billion, is to connect eight counties in the San Francisco Bay Area with the rest of California.

The groundbreaking ceremony took place on August 11, 2010 in the presence of Minister of Transport Ray LaHood , Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi , Senator Barbara Boxer and Mayor Gavin Newsom .

Project components

The project comprises three elements: the construction of the Transit Center, the extension of the Caltrain beyond the 4th and King, and the development of the neighboring area with offices, apartments and hotels. This also includes the 219 hectare public City Park, comparable to the High Line Park in Manhattan. The park was designed by PWP Landscape Architecture .

The levels from top to bottom:

  • City Park roof garden
  • 2nd floor: Bus level with direct connection to the Bay Bridge : Buses from the East Bay reach the Transit Center without having to go through the streets of San Francisco.
  • 1st floor: traffic area for passengers and visitors, administration and shopping areas.
  • Ground floor: main hall; Ticket sales.
  • 1st basement: ticket sales, waiting areas and bicycle parking areas.
  • 2nd basement: train station; three passenger platforms for the Caltrain and the planned California High-Speed Rail .

The pattern of the facade is derived from Penrose parquet .
