The transfer list referred to in football a list of football players who by their club for transfer are offered. The respective club, with which the player is currently under contract, intends to transfer this player to another club.

The meaning of a transfer list differs in different countries and league levels. In German professional football , the transfer list was very important between 1966 and 2015, as the clubs were obliged to put a player on the transfer list before the player could change clubs. In many other countries, on the other hand, there are only unofficial transfer lists that are used voluntarily by the clubs to advertise the sale of players by announcing that the transfer list is ready to sell.

Situation in German professional football

In 1966, the German Football Association (DFB) introduced the mandatory transfer list. At the beginning it existed in printed form and was updated regularly during the changeover periods . The players from all clubs in the first and second Bundesliga had to be put on the transfer list by the club who was releasing it by notifying the DFB so that another club could sign this player. This simplified the preparations for the DFB for an upcoming player change, as the DFB was able to check formalities such as the eligibility to play and the contractual modalities before the contract was signed between the clubs involved and the player .

In the further course the transfer list was no longer only distributed in printed form, but also digitally via the Internet and teletext . Sports magazines also regularly printed the current transfer list during the two transfer periods, as this made it possible to foresee which players would likely change clubs in the near future.

On the last day of a transfer period, a player had to be placed on the transfer list by 12 noon so that the player could change during the current period. Afterwards, the donating club had until 6 p.m. to submit the contract documents to the DFL. If this deadline was not met, the players were not allowed to switch until the next switching period.

The deciding factor for the obligation to put a player on the transfer list before the transfer was the league affiliation of the transferring club. Players who wanted to switch to a Bundesliga club from abroad or from lower-class clubs did not have to be put on the transfer list. On the other hand, players who moved from the first or second Bundesliga to a foreign country or to a lower-class club had to be put on the list.

In 2001 the German Football League (DFL) took over responsibility for the transfer list from the DFB. At the beginning of the changeover period in summer 2015, the transfer list was abolished in its previous form and replaced by the new "Transfer Online Registration System" (TOR). The TOR contains all the eligibility and contract documents of all players in the first and second Bundesliga, which is why the clubs do not have to register in advance. Unlike the transfer list, TOR information is not publicly available.

Situation in other countries

For England and Wales is by the Professional Footballers' Association is a voluntary transfer list out. This is not bound by any regulations and therefore cannot be compared with the transfer list that existed between 1966 and 2015 in the German federal leagues. Rather, the transfer list is used to enable clubs to show their willingness to transfer a player to another club through the transfer list. For a player transfer, however, it is not necessary that the player is placed on the transfer list beforehand. The transfer list is also available to lower-class clubs below professional football.
