A drive belt , a transmission belt or short belt is in drive technology , a flexible, self-contained band for transmitting power ( transmission ) in a belt transmission . It is usually made as an endless piece; in the past, connection techniques such as gluing and hooks were also common.

Brief description

“… The task of the propelling stuff is to propagate a movement to a greater or lesser distance with appropriately modified direction and speed; it is therefore one of the most important items in mechanical engineering. "

- Brockhaus 1855

Drive belts are differentiated based on their shape:

  • Flat belts consist of a flat band, originally mostly made of leather, later made of plastic or rubber. They often run on convex pulleys and then do not require any lateral guidance.
  • V-belts get their name from their wedge or trapezoidal cross-section, which mainly serves to increase friction and thus increase maximum power transmission . They are often toothed with small drive wheel diameters, but then do not intervene in a form-fitting manner.
    • A further development are V-ribbed belts that run on appropriately shaped wheels. They are a mixed form of V-belt and flat belt and combine their advantages. Often only the belt pulley with the smaller angle of contact is also provided with grooves and provides the lateral guidance, while the second pulley is smooth and spherical.
    • small rubber belts with a square cross-section are basically also V-belts. They run upright and are used in small electromechanical devices. Such belts are also called Peese .
  • In contrast to other belts, toothed belts have no slip - they run positively on a toothed wheel. Because of their synchronous power transmission, they are often used to control, for example, the valves of gasoline and diesel engines , as well as in actuators . Toothed belts are usually designed as flat toothed belts.
  • Round belts are often used to transmit smaller forces.

Leather has established itself as the material for the straps for centuries , but rubber , special textiles and mixed products are also used.

The interconnection of numerous drive belts and shafts through transmissions that were driven by large steam engines and later powerful engines and kept the numerous machines in the factories of the 19th century in motion was impressive.
