Sad Satan is a computer game that was developed with the terror engine and that the YouTube channel Obscure Horror Corner reported on for the first time on June 25, 2015. After initial reviews, the channel's video for the game was selected by a number of English-language publications and later internationally. The game's creator was reportedly a man from Lubbock, Texas named Gary Graves. Obscure Horror Corner's current whereabouts are unknown.

In an interview with Kotaku , the channel's owner claims to have downloaded the game from a hidden gate service after receiving a tip from an anonymous subscriber. The subscriber, in turn, claimed that the link via a Deep Web - Internet forum to have found, from a user who is known only as "CC". Initially, some supporters were skeptical of the game, fearing it might contain gore or child pornography . However, the owner of "Obscure Horror Corner" announced that the game had not contained such material in its previous playthroughs.

Following the Kotaku interview, the "/ r / sadsatan" subreddit was formed on the Reddit website to discuss the game and it quickly became apparent that the .onion address provided by Obscure Horror Corner contained invalid characters. Three days later, another interview with the owner of Obscure Horror Corner appeared on Kotaku, in which it was alleged that the link was intentionally incorrectly given because the game itself actually contained such imagery and the owner of the channel Obscure Horror Corner was not for the Disseminating such material wanted to be responsible. In an update to the Kotaku article, Patricia Hernandez explains:

I should have presented the tale of its discovery with more skepticism. I apologize for that. While the original article admits that the game exists in a more mythical state than a tangible one, it could have gone farther to make clear what was concrete about Jamie's tale and what wasn't.

I should have presented the story of their discovery with more skepticism. I apologize for that. Although the original article admits that the game exists in a more mythical than tangible state, it could have gone further to clarify what was specific about Jamie's narrative and what wasn't.

Minutes before the update, a new version of the game was posted on 4chan by someone posing as a ZK and claiming that Obscure Horror Corner had not shown its viewers the "real" Sad Satan. Members of the 4chan community downloaded this version of the game and tried to play it. Some users complained that their computers were starting to run sluggishly, and a few even reported that their computers became completely insensitive when trying to run the game. A few users even reported that their computer would not turn on after running this version of the game. A Reddit user tried playing the game from a live USB instead of the main hard drive on their computer. Later, when this user tried to start his computer, it was no longer possible. This version of the game, referred to as a " clone " by most members of the / r / sadsatan community , contained images of violent gore and child pornography, some of which were accessible directly from the title screen; as a result, another version of the game that had this artwork removed (often referred to as the "clean" version) was created by the Redditors and then redistributed.

In 2017, a man from Lubbock, Texas named Gary Graves was arrested for possession of child pornography. He ran the Scarebere YouTube channel , which posted a video titled Sad Sad Sad Satan . The YouTube channel in question can be traced back to a Reddit account that was set up 4 days before the post with the link to the "clone" was posted on 4chan. The Reddit account that was set up was called ScarebereZK . Another video found on the channel also featured a middle-aged man, the credits in the video identified him as Gary Graves. The man in the video is identical to another Gary who was found on the Lubbock Criminal Record in 2017 ; which led some to believe that Gary was in fact the creator and poster of the "clone" game.

The original game, posted by Obscure Horror Corner, features a stroll through monochromatic corridors while various audio samples are played and looped over each other. The tone in the game leans heavily on recordings of interviews with various murderers, such as Charles Manson . The game also relies heavily on distorted or reversed audio recordings of such interviews or music clips, such as: B. the song I love Beijing Tiananmen , which was played at the beginning. Reverse clips from the Swedish Rhapsody number broadcaster can also be heard.

As the player navigates his character through the corridors, there may be intermittent images that take up the entire screen and prevent the player from advancing further until the image automatically closes a few seconds later. Most of the images appear to be related to child abuse , especially those charged with Operation Yewtree, such as images of Jimmy Savile and Rolf Harris. Other images revolve around crimes and include people convicted or charged with murder, such as the Japanese child murderer, cannibal , rapist, and necrophile Tsutomu Miyazaki . This includes photos of statues of Lady Justice and political figures such as former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher . Images of accident and murder victims are also shown, including the aftermath of a person hitting a truck and being beheaded . Additionally, at least one version of the game includes an image related to the case of Corinne Danielle Motley , a Florida woman arrested for producing child pornography, the image being a screen cap from a video that led to her arrest.

This particular version also contained a virus that caused a variety of negative effects, from slowing down the infected computer to permanently shutting it down once the executable was run. The only other "characters" in the game are kids who just stand in one place and don't move or interact with the player at all. In the final video posted by Obscure Horror Corner, one of those kids starts following the player and causes "contact damage". Since the player has no means of self-defense or the ability to heal damage, the player inevitably dies at this point in the game.
