River course
The Traverspine River has its origins in a small nameless lake at a height of 510 m , 15 miles south of Muskrat Falls . The river initially flows 25 km in a predominantly east-southeast direction. He crosses a chain of lakes. The Kenamu River runs further south . The Traverspine River turns in the middle and lower reaches towards the north-northeast. The Trans-Labrador Highway crosses the river at river kilometer 50 . The Traverspine River flows through the lowlands and forms numerous meanders . 8 km above the mouth, the Atshakash-shipiss meets the river from the right. This finally flows into the right bank of the Churchill River, 14 km above its confluence with Lake Melville . On the opposite bank of the almost 2 km wide lower reaches of the Churchill River is the small town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay . The Traverspine River drains an area of 728 km².
Fish fauna
The following fish species are found in the Traverspine River: Atlantic salmon , brook char ( anadromous and non-anadromous form), arctic smelt and burbot . The salmon stock in the river system is estimated to be safe.
