TreeSize is a software product family that is used to manage hard disk space and helps to clean up and find space wasters and superfluous files . TreeSize runs on all Windows versions currently supported by Microsoft or Windows client and server versions (32 and 64 bit). There is one free and two shareware editions of this software.

The folder sizes cannot be displayed in a structured manner (side by side or in a tree map ) with Windows Explorer . The most important functionality of TreeSize, which is common to all editions, is the determination of folder sizes in a directory branch or drive, combined with different comparative display and report functions for the results.

The Professional and Personal Editions also search for particularly large, unused or superfluous files, such as temporary files or the files in the cache of web browsers such as Internet Explorer , Mozilla Firefox or Opera . In addition, duplicate files can be found using MD5 or SHA256 checksums and also deleted or replaced with hard links . When scanning local NTFS drives, TreeSize accesses the master file table and reads out the metadata stored there .

TreeSize also enables the development of the storage space consumption on hard drives to be monitored. This is done either with the help of exported XML files or by comparing so-called shadow copies that can be created by Windows System Restore or created manually.

TreeSize scans Windows, FTP, WebDAV and SharePoint servers as well as all mobile devices, Amazon S3 and Unix / Linux via SSH.

history

The first version of TreeSize was developed by Joachim Marder in 1996 in order to overcome the limitations of tools such as the Unix command du ( disk usage ) or the right-click in Windows Explorer. The program was planned from the beginning as a GUI-based version of du for Windows. Since then, it has been continuously developed by the company JAM Software he founded and has now reached version number 7.1 (as of May 2019).

TreeSize Free

TreeSize Free is the unlimited free version of the program. It has the basic functionality for the exact determination of folder sizes and integrates itself into the Windows Explorer, whereby it uses the same code base as the more extensive shareware versions.

Unlike many other storage space managers, TreeSize Free version 3.4 and higher also scans mobile devices that connect to the computer via Media Transfer Protocol . Android devices can also be scanned via WebDAV .

Other versions

The Personal Edition, which is also available as shareware, includes all the functions of TreeSize Professional (also shareware), but does not run on Windows server systems, does not support Windows domains and cannot be controlled via command line parameters.

A freeware version designed for Windows 10 mobile devices with a touch-optimized interface has been available in the Windows Store since October 2012 .
