Treimischer pond

The Treimischer Teiche are three artificially created ponds near the Viktring Abbey in the urban area of Klagenfurt am Wörthersee (Carinthia). They are located in the conservation area Treimischer pond.

In the course of the GEO Day of Species Diversity 2005, on 10./11. June 2005 in the area of the ponds and the adjacent monastery 1523 animal and plant species are detected.

Treimischer pond

The largest of the ponds is the Treimischer Teich, or Großer Treimischer Teich. It is around four hectares in size and was created by the damming of the Keutschacher Bach as a fish pond for the monastery. Its maximum depth is 2.5 m. In the west of the pond there is an extensive reed zone. There are forest areas in the east and south, these bank areas are used intensively as a local recreation area. Keutschacher Strasse runs along the north bank.

The water is rich in nutrients and therefore also rich in plankton . The most important representatives of the plant plankton are the genera Dinobryon , Rhodomonas , Cryptomonas , Cyclotella and Synedra . The pond is rich in fish and popular as a fishing spot.

The pond has a strong underwater vegetation, spawning herbs , milfoil , water lilies , pond roses and frog spoons dominate . A specialty is the water nut ( Trapa natans ) here and in the small pond. In addition to the abundance of fish, the painter's mussel ( Unio pictorum ) is worth mentioning.

Factory pond and old pond

These two ponds are located immediately to the west of the monastery buildings in a forest area. The factory pond is largely silted up and surrounded by reed and siltation zones. These are missing in the larger old or small Treimischer pond. Both ponds are largely surrounded by alder and beech trees and are used intensively as a local recreation area.

Surrounding areas

The forest areas around the ponds are rich in deciduous trees, and the stocks in the west of the landscape protection area at the foot of the slope and the lower slope area are predominantly deciduous forest. The rest is dominated by spruce forest.

Landscape protection area

The Treimischer Teiche area has been a landscape protection area since 1970 (LGBl. No. 70/1970), covers 26 hectares and is entirely within the territory of the municipality of Klagenfurt am Wörthersee.
