Trekantsambandet
The Trekantsamband (in German "triangle connection") is a road connection on the Norwegian west coast between Bergen and Stavanger . It connects the island communities of Stord and Bømlo with Sveio and thus the mainland.
The structure essentially consists of the two suspension bridges Stordabru and Bømlabru, the low bridge Spissøybru and the 7.8 km long submarine tunnel Bømlafjordtunnel , the lowest point of which is 260 m below sea level. The first two suspension bridges mentioned are among the largest suspension bridges in Norway (span of the Stordabru 677 m). The islands Spissøy , Nautøy and Føyno , which are now also connected to the mainland, were included. The triangular connection was opened to traffic on April 30, 2001.
The Trekantsamband replaces the three ferry connections Valevåg – Skjersholmane, Valevåg – Mosterhamn and Sagvåg – Siggjarvåg and made it possible to thin out the Skjersholmane-Utbjoa line.
The Bømlafjord tunnel and the Stordabru are part of the European route 39 , the main road link between Bergen and Stavanger. This part of the Trekantsambandet, which was completed first, was opened to traffic on December 28, 2000.
The entire construction cost 1.814 billion Norwegian crowns , of which 476 million crowns went to the tunnel. Financing was provided by the Norwegian government and revenue from tolls . The paying agent was on the island of Føyno; payment could be made in cash or electronically. In 2013, the construction costs and interest were brought in through the fees and the toll station on the E39 was dismantled. Since then, there has been an automated toll station on Bømlabru, which is not used to finance the Trekantsamband, but is used for the municipal road construction of the municipality of Bømlo.
In the end, the Trekantsamband cost less than originally estimated. It was intended that the municipality of Bømlo use part of the toll revenue for local road construction. The neighboring municipalities, however, contradicted this, so that this sum ultimately also benefited the overall financing.
