Staircase storage
The stair store is a small outbuilding where goods are stored. The upper floor of the warehouse is usually reached via a staircase attached to the outside of the gable , which gave the building its name.
Stairway storage facilities are only relatively small structures. They are witnesses to the craftsmanship of the rural carpenters . The pure wood construction ensured dryness inside and was so tightly concealed that the stored goods were protected from mice . In the past, the granaries were built within sight, but at a distance from the house. In the event of a fire in the farmhouse, the fire could not spread to the stored goods.
Staircase storages were characteristic in the Lüneburg Heath . The storage system remained alive here well into the 19th century. However, they are disappearing more and more because they are no longer practical today. The storage rooms are usually in the house today.
In the past, there was at least one, but mostly several, storehouses on every heather farm, all of which served specific purposes. There was corn , buckwheat , flax , yarn , linen , wool , honey , meat , bacon and clothes storage. Often they also served as a sleeping place for the servants .
