Tresorit is a file hosting - services (including cloud storage called). The company of the same name has branches in Switzerland and Hungary and focuses on increased security and encryption . The name "Tresorit" is based on the German word "Tresor". The service is chargeable. The business version offers 1 TB storage space per user and extended security functions such as digital rights management (DRM) and granular access rights . Tresorit has been repeatedly called a safe alternative to Dropbox .

Tresorit's service can be used with a desktop client as well as browser-based and mobile apps . So far the software is available for Windows , macOS , Android , Windows Phone 8 , iOS and Linux . This allows users a comparably large platform independence.

In addition to the "Tresorit" cloud storage product for end users, Tresorit also offers the "ZeroKit" software development kit for developers of other applications.

history

Tresorit was founded in 2011 by Hungarian programmers Istvan Lam, current CEO, Szilveszter Szebeni, who is currently CIO, and Gyorgy Szilagyi, CPO.

The market launch for Tresorit's client-side encrypted cloud storage took place after a secret beta test phase in April 2014.

When Wuala , a pioneer in the secure cloud storage segment, announced the discontinuation of the service after seven years in August 2015 , Tresorit was recommended to users as a secure alternative.

The websites and software have been available in German since the end of 2015.

In 2016, the company's founder, Istvan Lam, was included in Forbes magazine's European list of "30 under 30" for his pioneering work in the technology sector .

Parallel to the Tresorit software application for end users, the company released a beta version for a software development kit (SDK) called “ZeroKit” for developers at the end of 2016 . In January 2017, Apple's SDK project CareKit announced that developers of health apps could use ZeroKit to integrate zero-knowledge authentication in CareKit-based apps.

functionality

Tresorit encrypts files using client-side encryption according to the AES-256 standard before they are uploaded to the cloud. In addition, files are protected using HMAC message authentication codes, which are applied to SHA-512 hashes.

The company calls the encrypted file folders "vaults". Vaults are automatically synced to the cloud by the client when files are added or removed from it. This is similar to how Box.com and Dropbox work . The main difference between Tresorit and these competitors is that Tresorit client-side AES-256 encryption is already applied locally to the files and the data is thus encrypted and uploaded to the cloud. This can or must be done manually with the competition or upgraded with third-party software. In addition, Tresorit users can share the files and folders protected with end-to-end encryption with other users in order to work on them together, which ensures the security of the documents for every step of the data transfer.

In addition to other security measures, the coding key is only accessible to the end user. Using zero-knowledge encryption protocols means that the company does not have access to users' verification data. This principle means that user data cannot be hacked, usable, stolen or accidentally released from Tresorit's servers, nor can it be forwarded to government authorities in readable form on request.

Hacker Competition

In 2013 and 2014, Tresorit held a hacker competition in which the company promised $ 10,000 to each participant who could hack the encryption method and access Tresorit's server. After a few months, the prize pool increased to $ 25,000 and eventually to $ 50,000. The participants came from institutions such as Harvard , Stanford and MIT . The competition lasted 468 days and no one was able to break Tresorit's encryption .

reception

Tresorit has received a number of nominations and awards. Up-Cloud Rewards named Tresorit as one of the top 5 cloud security solutions in 2012. In 2017, the company was among the finalists of the Cybersecurity Excellence Award in the encryption category with its cloud storage product. In the cloud storage comparison of the comparison portal Netzsieger in July 2017, Tresorit achieved the second-best result of all tested providers with 4.78 out of 5 points. Trusted.de rated the service in the test with 90 percent or the grade 'very good' with particularly good results for security, user-friendliness and support.
