Trial by Fire - Live in Leningrad is the first live album by the Swedish guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen and was released in 1989.

Origin and admission

The album was created in February 1988 during a performance by Malmsteen and his band in what was then the WI Lenin Sports Concert Complex , now SKK Peterburgski , in Leningrad . The performance was part of a 20-concert tour through the Soviet Union , which attracted a total of 240,000 spectators. The background of the tour was, among other things, that Malmsteen had repeatedly been voted best guitarist in Soviet magazines.

According to keyboardist Jens Johansson , the recordings were later largely replaced by overdubs . Only the drums and most of the keyboard solos are said to have been used from the original live recording.

After this album, the entire line-up changed to Yngwie Malmsteen.

Notes on the pieces

On two tracks ( Dreamin and Black Star ) Malmsteen uses a classic Gibson - Chet Atkins solid body guitar. This is attached to a stand, as Carlos Santana uses one for his classical guitar in the beginning of Maria Maria 's video to switch between concert guitar and electric guitar. According to Malmsteens, the advantage of the classic Gibson-Chet-Atkins solid body is that it does not generate any feedback despite the high volume.

In the song You Don't Remember I'll Never Forget (studio version from the album Triology 1986) Yngwie quotes the song Greensleeves . Then he quotes with Joe Lynn Turner in a slightly different form from the well-known Ian Gillan / Ritchie Blackmore improvisation in Strange Kind of Woman by Made in Japan , where Blackmore plays something on the guitar and Gillan sings after it. He also quotes Love Is Blue in this song . Love Is Blue and Greensleeves were covered in the 1960s by guitarist Jeff Beck . Greensleeves was covered by the Malmsteen role model Ritchie Blackmore with Rainbow and Blackmore's Night .

In the instrumental Black Star , Malmsteen plays the famous Air of the third orchestral suite on a classic Gibson Chet Atkins solid body as the intro by Johann Sebastian Bach , while the original is in D major , he plays the guitar in G major . By Hendrix - mood , however, uses the Malmsteen, the whole sounds in the key of F # -Dur . Uli Jon Roth also made a guitar recording of this Air by Bach .

The album is only available as a transcription in Japan.
