Triangulation pillars in Wahnsdorf

description

Tower house of the former Wahnsdorf weather station on the open day 2016. In the back left under the trees is the triangulation column.

On the Wahnsdorfer Kuppe (contemporary: "Kuppe des Stadthübels on the footpath to Boxdorf") in the area of the former weather station Wahnsdorf and near the highest point of the Lößnitz at 249.4  m above sea level. NHN is a triangulation pillar (at a height of 246  m above sea  level ) made of Laußnitz granite, which defines one of the 122 trigonometric points of the Saxon land surveying in the 19th century . It is the 2nd order station with station number 64 .

The column was erected in April 1866 by Friedrich Robert Helmert on a piece of land owned by the Wahnsdorf landowner JG Fickler; the measure cost 154 marks. The column foundation, which sits on the rock, consists of two base and two upper layers; to protect the base of the column, it was surrounded by a cone of earth. The originally visible height is given as 2.2 meters. The attached cover plate serves to protect the upper measuring surface.

The inscription of the so-called Nagelschen column (after the Saxon professor for geodesy August Nagel , whose assistant Helmert was) reads: “Station WAHNSDORF der Kön. Saxon. Triangulation 1865. "

The column was restored in 2012 through the initiative of the Wahnsdorf home association.
