Tribal hidage
The tribal hidage is a list of which of 34 south the size of the Humber situated Anglo-Saxon indicates kingdoms and tribal areas.
The original list was drawn up in Mercia between the mid-7th and late 9th centuries. Whether the Tribal Hidage represents a uniform work or has been compiled over a longer period of time is just as unknown as the intended use. It may be a tribute or tax list. The numerous small Central English ethnic groups and tribes mentioned indicate older social structures from which Mercia and the other kingdoms of the heptarchy also emerged . The spatial allocation of the smaller areas is partly uncertain.
The oldest surviving manuscript ("Review A" in MS Harley 3271) was written in Old English and dates from the 11th century. The Latin "Review B" from the 13./14. Century shows only minor differences.
