Tribulocarpus dimorphanthus is the only plant of monotypic genus Tribulocarpus from the family of aizoaceae (Aizoaceae). The botanical name of the genus is derived from the name of the genus Tribulus and its thorny fruits.

description

Tribulocarpus dimorphanthus grows shrubby and reaches heights of up to 50 centimeters (Namibia) or between 100 and 150 centimeters (Somalia). The blade of the leaves is 10 to 20 millimeters long and 10 to 15 millimeters wide. It is covered with spherical papillae and appears whitish. At the base it is reduced to a petiole. Its tip is truncated to blunt.

The short lobed flowers appear in compact groups. The final group is bisexual and has very long flower tubes that appear almost like flower stalks.

The spherical fruits are covered with numerous spines 2 to 8 millimeters in length.

Systematics and distribution

Tribulocarpus dimorphanthus is distributed in dry grasslands in two clearly separated areas in Namibia and Somalia .

The first description as Tetragonia dimorphantha was made in 1889 by Ferdinand Albin Pax . In 1921, Spencer Le Marchant Moore (1850–1931) established that of the genus Tribulocarpus . Robert Stephen Adamson (1885-1965), however, viewed them as a subgenus of Tetragonia ( Tetragonia subg. Tribulocarpus ).
