Spencer Le Marchant Moore (born November 1, 1850 in Hampstead , London , † March 14, 1931 in Streatham , London) was a British botanist and plant collector . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " S.Moore ".

Life

After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in botany from University College London , Moore was employed at the Royal Botanic Gardens (Kew) in 1872 . Between 1875 and 1880 he published, partly in collaboration with John Gilbert Baker , numerous articles on collections from northern China, tropical Africa, the Mascarene Islands and a large number of genera of orchids and acanthus in the Journal of Botany . In 1877 the first article in the series of articles Alabastra diversa , descriptions and critical notes on genera and species of Bedecktsamern appeared in the same journal , which, with the exception of the period from 1880 to 1899, was continued almost annually until 1929. From 1877 to 1879 he was an assistant editor to Henry Trimen at the Journal of Botany. A falling out with Joseph Dalton Hooker led in 1880 to the resignation of Moore at the Royal Botanic Gardens (Kew) and an attempt to get a post at the botanical department of the British Museum of Natural History was unsuccessful. In the following ten years, Moore turned to plant cell biology . He has published a number of articles on this subject, which appeared in the Journal of the Linnean Society under the title Studies in Vegetable Biology . They dealt with the subjects of continuity of the protoplasm , the effect of light on the movement of the protoplasm and the type of callus . However, these articles received little attention.

In 1891 and 1892 Moore took part in a botanical expedition to the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso , from which he returned with a large collection. The description of this collection, which contains numerous new genera and species, was published in December 1895 under the title The Phanerogamic Botany of the Matto Grosso Expedition, 1891-92 in the Transactions of the Linnean Society. This publication is considered to be Moore's standard work.

Between December 1894 and October 1895 Moore took part in a small expedition to the Goldfields-Esperance region in inland Western Australia . The journey took him from Southern Cross to Siberia Soak, via Goongarrie, Menzies , Mount Margaret, the Bates Range, Lake Darlot and Coolgardie . He described the results of this expedition in 1899 in the article Botanical Results and Observations on the Nature and Relations of the Desert Flora in the Journal of the Linnean Society of London.

In 1898, Moore was accepted as an unofficial part-time worker in the botanical department of the British Museum of Natural History. From then until shortly before his death he worked continuously on the museum's herbarium collections. His main interests were the daisy and acanthus families but also the Australian flora. He also dealt with the dicotyledonous (Dicotylodon), about which he wrote several critical descriptions. Moore contributed to the seventh volume of the work Flora of Jamaica: containing descriptions of the flowering plants known from the island by William Fawcett , which was published in 1936 by Alfred Barton Rendle after Fawcett's death .

In 1875 Moore became a Fellow of the Linnean Society of London . Its collections are located in the herbaria of the Botanical Gardens and Botanical Museum Berlin-Dahlem , the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh , the Royal Botanic Gardens (Kew), the Missouri Botanical Garden , the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria , the New York Botanical Garden , the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle , in the Natural History Museum Vienna and the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro .

Dedication names

Henry Trimen named the genus Spenceria after Moore in 1879 with Spenceria ramalana as the only species. The plant genus Lemooria P.S.Short from the sunflower family (Asteraceae) is also named after him.
