Trichius sexualis , as Southeast brush beetle , discloses a beetle from the family of scarab beetles (Scarabaeidae). The species is assigned to the subfamily of the rose beetles (Cetoniinae). Trichius sexualis is one of three species of the genus Trichius that occur in Central Europe.

features

The beetles reach a length of 10–12 mm. The head and pronotum have brownish hairs. The elytra are usually yellow with three black bars that do not reach the suture of the wing. The wing pattern can, however, be very variable.

Males and females can usually be identified by the formation of the first phalanx . In the male, this is widened and rounded at the apical end. The center rail has in males as opposed to Trichius fasciatus no deep notch. Trichius sexualis differs from the species Trichius gallicus found in western Europe on the ventral side of the males. The species has whitish scales on the four penultimate sternites , while T. gallicus is whitish scales only on the penultimate sternite. The pygidium of the females of the three related species also shows differences.

Occurrence

Trichius sexualis is common in southeastern Europe. They occur in the west via Austria and Bavaria to Alsace and the Vosges .

Way of life

The larvae of Trichius sexualis develop in hardwood and take two years to become an adult beetle. The beetles usually fly from mid-May to early August. The particularly heat-loving beetle species can be found on sun-exposed forest edges and slopes. The beetles are often seen on the flowers of elder , but also on the flowers of various umbellifers .
