The felty hair moss ( Trichocolea tomentella ) is a species of liverwort from the Trichocoleaceae family . It is probably one of the most beautiful European liverworts and is the only representative of the predominantly tropical species Trichocolea .

features

Trichocolea tomentella forms loose, light green, spongy-looking lawns. The sturdy plants are up to 10 centimeters long and are regularly pinnate 2 to 3 times. The undershot flank leaves are divided almost to the base into 4 to 5 lobes only a few cells wide, which in turn are covered with long, single-row and branched eyelashes. Between the flank leaves there are numerous paraphyllia cut into long eyelashes . The sub-leaves resemble the flank leaves. The lamina cells are rectangular, about 58 × 18 µm in size and have thin walls, the cells of the eyelashes are slightly longer. There are 5 to 8 oil bodies per leaf cell .

The plants are diocesan . Sporophytes are formed only very rarely, they have an approximately 3 cm long seta with an elongated, round spore capsule.

Location claims and distribution

Trichocolea tomentella grows on earth, humus and over-earthed limestone rocks in moderately acidic to neutral, damp to wet, shady and humid locations such as brook edges, forest ravines and swelling places in alder quarries. It is widespread in the lower mountain ranges, in the lowlands it occurs scattered.

Non-European occurrences are found in Asia, in eastern North America, in western South America and in Oceania .
