Trident is an eroded volcanic complex at the beginning of the Alaska Peninsula that formed along a northeast-southwest facing fault on the Pacific side of the Alaska Peninsula. It consists of numerous cones (up to 23) up to 1,864 m (6115 feet) in height. In 1953, a new dome formed at an elevation of 1097 m (3599 feet) on the southwest flank.

According to the United States Geological Survey , the area was named after Robert Fiske Griggs , a member of the National Geographic Society , in 1916. He named the area after three prominent peaks. The area was given other names, but in 1928 it was officially named Mount Trident by the United States Board on Geographic Names , the current name Trident Volcano given in 1968.

last activities

Alaska Peninsula Volcano

There were no known activities at the top of Mount Trident . However, there are some fumaroles on the eastern side. There are reports of activities from the years 1913, 1949 and 1950. On February 15, 1953, a secondary crater formed on the south-western flank, which sent its ashes up to 9000 m high. In the years 1954, 1957, 1958 and 1959–1960, some lava flowed from another secondary crater, and there was at times an ash column 7000 m high. in 1960 the cone had reached a height of 260 m and up to 300 meters thick lava covered (5 km²) the area. Lava flows were observed from 1966 to 1968 and 1974 to 1975. In 1983 steam bursts and fumaroles were reported.
