Trigonotylus psammaecolor is a species of bug from the family of soft bugs (Miridae).

features

The bugs are 5.3 to 7.0 millimeters long. The species of the genus Trigonotylus have an elongated body with a longitudinal furrow between the compound eyes and a smooth, unpunctured pronotum . The first link of their antennae has short, spiky hairs and is no longer than the head. In Trigonotylus psammaecolor has a pale green color and can be narrowed down based on the populated habitat to sand dunes on the coast in the determination.

Occurrence and habitat

The species is distributed on the coasts of the Baltic and North Sea and the Atlantic from Scandinavia and Poland to France and Spain to the western Mediterranean. In Germany it is not uncommon in suitable places and can also be frequent locally. The parts facing the sea are populated by coastal dunes.

Way of life

Trigonotylus psammaecolor lives on the sweet grasses (Poaceae), which dominate their habitat, common beach grass ( Ammophila arenaria ), beach rye ( Leymus arenarius ) and common couch grass ( Elymus farctus ) and, more rarely, on riding grass ( Calamagrostis ). In addition, the species does not appear to suckle any other species. They suck on the immature seeds and leaves, sucking on the former being much more important for their nutrition. The females lay their eggs on the ears of the host plants. The bugs tolerate extreme winds and can cling to the grasses even in storms. One generation is trained every year. The adults only have a short life expectancy and appear from late June to early August.
