Trimyristine is a component of vegetable oils and fats . The compound belongs to the group of fatty acid esters of glycerine (glycerol), the triacylglycerine .

history

A substance was obtained from nutmeg butter , the seed fat of the nutmeg tree ( Myristica fragrans ) obtained by pressing , which turned out to be a glycerol ester of tetradecanecarboxylic acid (myristic acid) and was therefore called trimyristine .

Occurrence

nutmeg

The seed fat is special insofar as the compound occurs in a very high proportion among the commonly mixed triglycerides (triacylglycerols). Therefore, it could be isolated easily.

Trimyristin is not only found in the nutmeg family (Myristicaceae), but also (to a lesser extent) in the fats and oils of numerous other plant families.
