Triricinolein is the triglyceride of ricinoleic acid and, with a content of over 75%, the main component of castor oil , which is obtained from the seeds of the miracle tree ( Ricinus communis ). The specialty of this vegetable oil is based on ricinoleic acid, which is an unsaturated fatty acid with a hydroxyl group .

Castor Seeds

Triricinolein is an important raw material for preparations in the field of cosmetics with a moisturizing and emollient effect for skin and hair as well as for the manufacture of technical products.

The extraction takes place exclusively from the natural product. However, triricinolein cannot be separated economically as a pure substance directly from castor oil. An indirect route is therefore chosen: after the triglycerides of the castor oil have been saponified , the ricinoleic acid is separated off and purified. This can then in turn be esterified with glycerine to chemically pure mono-, di- and triricinolein. In the food industry, it is used as a highly effective emulsifier polyglycerine polyricinoleate (PGPR, food additive E 476) as a rheological aid in chocolate production. PGPR can be viewed as a " polycondensed " triricinolein.
