Tristano Manacorda (born October 24, 1920 in Florence , † May 21, 2008 in Pisa ) was an Italian physicist and university professor.

Life

Tristano Manacorda was born in Florence in 1920 as the son of the humanities scholar Guido Manacorda, who was known for his Italian translation of Goethe's Faust and Richard Wagner's libretti . He studied theoretical physics at the University of Florence and graduated with honors in 1943. He stayed at the University of Florence as an assistant for theoretical mechanics and analysis until 1948, when he moved to the National Institute for Higher Mathematics (INdAM) in Rome and then became an assistant for theoretical mechanics at the University of La Sapienza . In 1956 he won the competition for a full professorship in theoretical mechanics at the University of Parma . In 1960 he received a professorship for theoretical mechanics at the University of Pisa , where he founded the Institute for Applied Mathematics.

Manacorda is one of the founders of modern continuum mechanics , especially for extreme deformations. This theory, which had a long tradition in Italy, was originally considered too abstract to be of practical use. As highly deformable products and materials such as tires, polymers, and membranes became more prevalent, it proved essential for predicting behavior.
