biography

Trivendra Singh Rawat was born in a small mountain village in Uttarakhand. He comes from a family with a military tradition and his father was a professional soldier with the Garhwal Rifles . The son attended the local school and later studied at Garhwal University in Srinagar (Uttarakhand), where he earned degrees in journalism and history .

Rawat joined the Hindu cadre organization Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) early on and worked as a pracharak ("volunteer") for 12 years . He then became the organizing secretary ( sangathan mantri ) of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the then undivided Uttar Pradesh. During this time he came into contact with the future Prime Minister Narendra Modi , who at that time held the same function in the BJP at the national level. Rawat also took part in the agitation for the creation of a separate state of Uttarakhand (which was supported by the BJP) and was therefore briefly detained several times. In 2000 this political goal was achieved or implemented by the BJP-led government under Atal Bihari Vajpayee . In the first election to parliament of the newly formed state of Uttarakhand in 2002, Rawat was elected as a BJP MP in constituency 18-Doiwala . He was able to win the constituency again in the following election in 2007. In the governments of Chief Ministers Bhuvan Chandra Khanduri (2007–2009) and Ramesh Pokhriyal (2009–2012) he held the post of Minister of Agriculture. In the 2012 election, which was lost overall for the BJP, he lost to his opponent from the Congress Party in the constituency of 19-Raipur.

After the BJP won a three-quarters majority of the seats in the parliamentary elections in Uttarakhand 2017, Rawat was sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Uttarakhand on March 18, 2017.

Rawat is described as a devout Hindu and Shiva worshiper who makes a pilgrimage to Kedarnath Temple every year .
