The Trogenbach Bridge  - often also called the Trogenbach Viaduct - is a railway bridge in the town of Ludwigsstadt in the north of the Upper Franconian district of Kronach . The Hochstadt-Marktzeuln – Probstzella railway runs across the bridge .

history

Railway accident in 1924

The Trogenbach Bridge was built between 1883 and 1885 to connect the existing route networks in Bavaria and Thuringia with a continuous railway line from Stockheim via Ludwigsstadt and Probstzella to Eichicht . Due to the poor traffic connection of the place, the bridge was not built as a pure steel girder construction, as was customary at the time, but mostly bricked by hand with slate from the nearby Lauenstein - since 1978 a district of Ludwigsstadt. The total costs for the construction of the building amounted to 309,000  marks .

When it opened on October 1, 1885, the railway line was initially equipped with only one track, although the bridge was designed for double-track operation from the start. The operational sequence of train divisions and many empty runs of the sliding locomotives on the two steep ramps from Pressig-Rothenkirchen and Probstzella to Steinbach am Wald quickly made it necessary to relocate the second track, so that double-track operation could begin on November 22, 1890.

In the course of renovation work, which lasted from the beginning of 1923 to May 12, 1924, the three iron box structures of the bridge were replaced by fish belly girders. Further construction work followed in autumn 1935, when the two masonry supporting pillars of the bridge were reinforced with a concrete coating in preparation for the upcoming electrification of the railway line .

In 1945 the bridge was supposed to be blown up towards the end of the Second World War , but this could be prevented by the then second mayor of the city.

The Deutsche Bundesbahn carried out renovation and conservation measures on the arches in 1955/56 and on the iron structures in 1967.

Railway accident in 1924

On February 18, 1924, a serious train accident occurred on the Trogenbach Bridge, which was only passable on a single track due to construction work. A freight train traveling the downhill section from Steinbach am Wald to Probstzella ran over a switch in front of the bridge at too high a speed due to defective brakes and derailed. The locomotive and 21 of the 27 cars fell from the bridge onto the buildings below; two people died.

construction

The structure, which is a combination of stone arch and girder bridge, crosses the valley of the Trogenbach, which flows into the Loquitz in Ludwigsstadt, with a total length of 200 meters ; the greatest height above the valley floor is 26 meters, making the bridge one of the highest railway viaducts in Germany at that time. On the southern slope of the valley there are initially four brick arches with a width of 14.5 meters, which are followed by three 32-meter long steel lattice girders with an overhead carriageway, which are supported by two brick pillars. The two pillars were additionally reinforced with a concrete coating in 1935. Another stone arch with a width of 14.5 meters follows on the north slope of the valley.
